- 82 - Obituaries STUART YORK 21st September 1938 – 23rd August 2019 Stuart, a native of the village of Harpole in Northamptonshire, had worked for the Nationwide Building Society (and its predecessor) all his working life – at least until the age of 50 when he retired! – and this enabled him to concentrate on the two most important things in his life: his family and sport. He was an enthusiastic golfer and went on many tours, both in the UK and overseas but his energies were not limited to golf, cricket and football. He was a fierce competitor at darts, quizzes, ten-pin bowling and playing cards and was a mean hand at the Telegraph crossword. He was also to be remembered and watched out for his wicked sense of humour. In sport Stuart will be best remembered for his cricketing prowess. In 1975 Buckinghamshire CCC qualified for the Gillette Cup and drew Middlesex at Lord’s (in those far-off days the Minor Counties were allowed to play the ‘big boys’ in competitive cricket). Although Bucks were well beaten, he scored a fine 73 not out and he and Brian Poll enjoyed an unbroken stand of 56 for the 8th wicket – then a record for the Gillette Cup and indeed the only record ever held by the Minor Counties in the competition continued…
