Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2012

7 Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society Stephen Mann gave a very detailed insight into the workings of the Members’ Committee at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the problems faced, the relationship with the main board and the way forward. His talk was well received as evidenced by the questions to him and his succinct answers. Members and their guests once again enjoyed the Autumn Dinner held at Baldwin’s Omega. Dom Antony Sutch proposed a toast to the Society in a very humorous speech to which our Vice President, Sir Tim Rice responded. The evening was rounded off by excellent entertainment from Lea Roberts . The success of the evening once again being a tribute to the hard work and dedication put into the organisation of the event by David Drabble and David Baldwin. What a pleasure it was to welcome former Warwickshire and England batsman Dennis Amiss to Abbeydale for a supper evening. Following an excellent Pea & Pie Supper, Dennis entertained us with some of his memories of playing in 50 Test matches, 18 ODI’s and over 650 First Class games. He also scored England’s first ever One Day International Century. Having retired from first class cricket in 1987 Dennis is still involved with the game and is currently Deputy Chairman of the England & Wales Cricket Board. A superb evening in the company of a cricketing legend and a thorough gentleman. This was an evening with a difference!! Anthony Collis & Geoff Wellsteed , co-authors of a book ‘Inns and Outs’, gave a slide show highlighting their study of English and Welsh Pubs with a cricket related name or sign. It was quite a surprise to learn that they had managed to find 334 pubs in England and Wales fitting their criteria. Some pubs mentioned in the evening... The ‘Thomas Lord’... W.G. Grace having a few entries, ...’The Rohan Kanhai’ “a Free House in Ashington, County Durham... ‘Fiery Fred’ and The ‘Larwood’. Sadly the ‘Sir Geoffrey Boycott’ in Dewsbury no longer exists!! Maybe some names for the future. The ‘Sir Ian Botham’. ‘The KP’ and how about The ‘Freddie Flintoff’!!! Incidentally Geoff Wellsteed is Secretary of the Cheshire County League and a true Cricket Lover. A most entertaining evening enjoyed by all. Continued on page 24...
