Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2013

27 Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society The Indoor Season... ...continued Monday 19th March Colin Povey Chief Executive, Warwickshire CCC. Colin Povey was appointed Chief Executive of Warwickshire CCC in 2006. His major priority was to manage the Club whilst the Edgbaston Stadium was being completely modernised. His prior business career with Thames Water, Carlsberg UK and his appointment as a non executive Director of top Rugby Union Club, Northampton Saints, provided him with a comprehensive and unique background which enabled him to tackle the huge job of keeping Edgbaston working whilst the refurbishment of the Stadium took place. With the aid of some excellent slides Colin took us through the planning and development of Edgbaston, and explained how he managed to raise the £32 million required to transform the Stadium into one of the finest cricket grounds in the world. Monday 2nd April 2012 Freelance journalist and author Chris Arnot was our guest for trhe evening. Chris, the author of the book “Britains Lost Cricket Grounds “ the chronicle of forty hallowed cricket grounds which would never see another ball bowled. We heard of grounds being lost to Superstore developments, and some now eradicated in favour of Motorway progress. Of special interest to our members however was the passing of Bramall Lane as a home of cricket. We were fortunate that our own member Eric Burgin, now sadly deceased, was able to offer some of his own personal memories of the end of cricketing days there. This was a fascinating evening and Chris ended by telling us that he would soon be starting his research into “Lost Football Grounds”. Annual Dinner Our 52nd Annual Dinner was held as a tribute to the President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Geoffrey Boycott OBE . Members and Guests once again enjoyed a superb meal at Baldwins Omega. Following the meal the Chairman proposed a toast to The President, to which The President responded with some recollections of his career both as an active player and now as a member of the Cricketing Media. He gave us some very positive opinions on some of the emerging players at Yorkshire, in particular predicting fine futures for Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow as England players. The evening ended with some excellent comedy from Martin Gold and once again we are indebted to David Drabble for his hard work organising the dinner and to David Baldwin and his staff at the Omega for an excellent meal.
