Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2013

31 Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society the creek without a paddle” summed it up best of all. Despite this “monsoon” season, Yorkshire kept in touch at the top and went on to clinch promotion thanks to three more wins and a determined, solid attitude which made them hard to beat during a Championship season where they regained confidence under the new regime. Their excellent 20/20 form was also a bonus. Magnificent in the field and with a game plan that foxed others, they reached Final’s day for the first time. Hampshire beat the Tykes in the final but Yorkshire had been the team of the tournament. They were inspired by overseas stars, David Miller and Mitchell Starc but home grown talent had shone as well. Azeem Rafiq got some captaincy experience and did a magnificent job. All of my media colleagues marvelled at the bowling of youngster, Mohin Ashraf and Yorkshire had their season extended with an appearance in the Champions League. They had to win two qualifiers in South Africa which they duly did. After that it was uphill – but what an experience! It is fitting that Yorkshire are back in the top division as celebrations begin to mark the 150 th anniversary of a great club. How will they do in 2013? Well, that’s another story. Dave Callaghan Awards, 2012 • Outstanding batsman – Gary Ballance • Outstanding bowler – Steve Patterson • Outstanding fielder – Gary Ballance • Low point – the weather!
