Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2013

7 Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society 2nd November 2011 Former Warwickshire and England player John Jameson was our next speaker and what an interesting evening it turned out to be. John was born in Mumbai ( Bombay for those with a good memory). He came to England at the age of 15 to attend Taunton School, his cricketing prowess brought him to the attention of Warwickshire for whom he played from 1960 to 1976. He managed to break in to the England team playing in four Tests and three ODI,s. He amused us by relating his world record status as the only player to have been run out in both innings of a Test match and also being run out in three successive Test innings! John retired in 1976 to return to Taunton School as Cricketing Coach. He was a First Class Umpire between 1984 and 1987, moved on then to Coaching Sussex before being appointed Assistant Secretary of The MCC. John was awarded the MBE for services to Cricket and still remains a member of the Warwickshire Committee. Fascinating evening enjoyed by all. 7th November Our speaker for this evening was billed as Mark Chilton , yet another Yorkshire born player to have made good outside Yorkshire. We were however delighted that Mark had brought along with him Yorkshire player, Rich Pyrah . Obviously good friends the early comments from both set the scene for an excellent evening. Mark made his debut for Lancashire in 1997 having been captain of Lancashire junior sides. He scored over 15000 runs in his career with 21 centuries and his medium pace bowling was good enough to class him as a genuine all rounder. He was appointed captain of Lancashire in 2004 and led them to promotion to Division 1 in 2005.His obvious disappointment that he did not manage to get his hands on the trophy was apparent although he stated how proud he was to have taken them to the final of the C&G in 2006. Mark admitted that his form began to desert him and he stood down as captain at the end of the 2007. He remained a member of the Lancashire squad but announced his retirement at the end of 2011 season following their success in winning the championship. Richard was happy to tell us that he felt he had enjoyed his cricket in 2011 and naturally we were delighted to hear from him a proud recall of his magnificent 117 off 126 balls in the Roses match earlier in the season. Mark was very pleased to concede that it was a magnificent knock, and he was very “sorry” that the Roses clash would not be repeated in 2012! The questions and answers session was highly entertaining and everyone agreed it had been a splendid evening.
