Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Year Book 2014

17 Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society 21st November 2012 A warm welcome to Trevor Vennet-Smith a leading Auctioneer who specialises in Sporting memorabilia. Trevor is an ardent cricket lover and currently the President of the Gunn & Moore, South Nottinghamshire Cricket league. He still manages to get in the odd game of cricket. He brought with him a large collection of items of cricket memorabilia, some of which were due to ‘go under the hammer’ the following week. Amongst them was a cricket bat which belonged to Reg Simpson, some silk scorecards , a pre 1900 Yorkshire CCC Year Book and a large collection of cricketing books. A very interesting evening. 3rd December 2012 Bringing the first half of our indoor season to a close we were pleased to have the Derbyshire Chairman ,Chris Grant as our guest. Chris told us something of his career in the City of London and his good fortune in being able to take early retirement in 2007. He moved back to Derbyshire where he became active with his local club Swarkestone. He helped them to rebuild their pavilion . He soon became involved with Derbyshire and after only a short time on the committee was quite surprised to be nominated to be Chairman to succeed Don Arnott. In his first year, he and his executive team managed to turn a loss of £180000 in 2010/11 season into a small profit of around £20000. During the year Chris had to make the difficult decision to replace John Morris, the Head Coach with Karl Krikken. His ambition to build a team in which nine players were all qualified to play for England was specific in so far as he hoped that those players would also come from Derbyshire! He had also some ideas to attract supporters from a wider catchment area, even offering free parking to those who had driven more than 30 miles! We thoroughly enjoyed his presentation and feel sure that he will have much success. Monday 14th January Charles Hartwell, Finance Director of Yorkshire County Cricket Club was scheduled to be our speaker this evening. However , typical seasonal weather; freezing and snowing , forced us to cancel the meeting. Thursday 31st January A Review of the Sporting year was hosted by our member Bob Jackson former BBC Radio Sheffield presenter. Members of his panel, Kevin Howells, Alan Biggs and Richard Fidler kept us entertained with their wide-ranging reviews not only of cricket but comprehensive cover of local football teams, opinions on the 2012 Olympics , England’s chances in the up-coming Ashes series and particular emphasis on the prospects for Yorkshire and Derbyshire for the 2012 season. An interesting and amusing evening. Thank you to all contributors. Continued on page 24 The Indoor Season... ...continued www.sheffieldcricketlovers.org.uk
