Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Year Book 2014

6 Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society 24th September 2012 Once again we welcomed Dave Callaghan to get our indoor season underway. Obviously, with Yorkshire having won promotion back to Division 1. Dave was in high spirits and began by praising Jason Gillespie and Paul Farbrace for their contribution to a successful season. He admitted that there was some sadness at the departure of some long term servants of the County in the coaching staff but the end results justified the changes. He also congratulated Derbyshire for having won the second division and looked forward to them also enjoying a good season in the top tier.. He was very hopeful that we had seen an improvement in the T20 games and felt that some of the younger players were making valuable contributions in all forms of the game. He particularly picked out Gary Ballance who he felt sure would join Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan into the England squad in the near future (And of course he was absolutely right). David answered many questions in his forthright style and all present thoroughly enjoyed the evening. 1st October 2012 A very interesting Double act this evening our guests being Mickey Stewart O.B.E and a revisit by Stephen Chalke whose latest book “Micky Stewart and the Changing Face of Cricket” was to feature in the evenings presentation. Micky Stewart, former First Class player with Surrey and England Manager from 1986 until 1992 entertained with some of the highlights of his own playing career which spanned 530 First Class games and eight Test matches for England. He then moved on to the responsibility of managing the England side, where he was widely regarded as having brought some discipline to the squad. His humour in describing his relationship with his son Alec Stewart both in the dressing room and at home was appreciated by all. The Q & A session after the break allowed both Micky Stewart and Stephen Chalke to ensure that we had a most pleasant evening. 15th October 2012 A warm welcome back to former Yorkshire bowler and now regular after dinner speaker, Mike Cowan. Mike, who played for Yorkshire from 1953 to 1962, had to cut short his career due to injury. Undeterred he soon forged a successful career in sales where he worked for Horlicks, Unichem and had a long career with Penguin Books. He is now very much in demand as an after dinner speaker and his many true stories from both cricket and sales careers gave us an evening of The Indoor Season... 2012-2013 Bev Stokes, Chairman twitter: @scloverssociety
