Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2016

15 www.sheffieldcricketlovers.org.uk Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society Out of a series of wonderful performances, the win at Durham in July by an innings and 47 runs was a keynote success. Durham had been going well but they were well beaten as Yorkshire recovered from 190 for 6 thanks to an unbroken partnership of 366 from Bairstow and Bresnan . It was a tremendous win and the Tykes never looked back. An off-field decision also played a part in Yorkshire’s stunning season. Speculation was finally put to bed in late May when England opted for Trevor Bayliss as their new coach. The fact that Jason Gillespie was staying at the Club was a massive positive. He has been highly impressive since day one and would have been sorely missed for a number of reasons if England had chosen the former Aussie paceman. Gillespie remains a target for many who have seen the strides that the Yorkshire side has taken under his leadership. For the record, the title was won at Lord’s on the first day and no one could deny that Yorkshire were worthy winners once again. There is now a massive determination from Yorkshire to make it three titles on the trot. It would be a remarkable achievement and there is no reason why the Club cannot dominate the Championship for the next five years. Quality young players such as Will Rhodes and Matt Fisher are emerging and the squad is full of talent which should bear fruit again, even if England come calling once more!!
