33 www.sheffieldcricketlovers.org.uk Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society it played against Chile but did not play in an ICC sanctioned International match until 2010 in the South America Championship Division Four event in Mexico, achieving a win against Costa Rica. I mentioned earlier the challenges of playing and it’s worth noting that the average daily wind-speed in the Falkland Islands is around 70 mph! The ground at RAF Mount Pleasant, 643 metres above sea level, is in somewhat of a bowl that affords some protection but it can’t completely remove the element of ‘swing’ that has to be applied to most deliveries. The effect of the wind can be so strong, blowing horizontally along the ground (causing a phenomena known as rotors), that even vehicles have been knocked off the road. I can personally attest to being blown over while walking to work. The South Atlantic Ashes series in 2011 was for me a unique occasion. With large Turkey Vultures watching from the deep brush of the outfield to the sportsmanship of the Falkland Islanders, whose warmth and friendliness is something I shall always remember. The trophy itself is literally a work of art, created by a local artist specifically for the series, the trophy depicts a dinosaur egg with a creature rising from within. As for my small part in what was to be a victory for the CBF team and a South Atlantic Ashes win? I scored eight runs before being caught, and if memory serves, I took a single wicket on my final over, aided no doubt by a sudden drop in the wind speed to a surprised batsman.
