9 www.sheffieldcricketlovers.org.uk Yorkshire Cricket Foundation 2015 Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation is a registered charity that delivers community projects across the county. Using the power of sport, and cricket in particular, the foundation aims to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of those living in Yorkshire. Our work covers five key themes which are:- • Education • Health & Wellbeing • History & Heritage • Participation • Inclusion 2015 was a fantastic year for the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and has seen us engage with more people than ever, bringing new projects and events to communities across the county. Some of our highlights include Cricket in the Classroom Cricket in the classroom is our flagship education scheme. It runs twice a week during term time, with 4,000 school children attending each academic year. The children take part in a classroom session learning about Yorkshire Cricket and taking part in quizzes and tasks aimed to develop their English, maths, history and geography skills. Following the education session the children also receive a cricket coaching session followed by a tour of the ground. Beach Cricket Tournament As part of the Scarborough Cricket Festival we run an annual beach cricket tournament for boys and girls U11. The three day tournament sees 9 teams playing Kwik cricket matches against each other with the participants receiving tickets to watch Yorkshire at Scarborough and Headingley. Education Day As part of national cricket week we organise an event at Headingley Cricket Ground called Education Day. 600 school children from all across the county travel to the home of Yorkshire Cricket to take part in a number of workshops including Kwik cricket, health workshop, literacy skills, dance and many more. The day is linked to the international teams visiting during the summer. This year all 600 children took part in a mass HAKA on the outfield at the end of the day. Health Checks As part of our health agenda we have been working closely with Yorkshire Cancer Research and Boundaries for Health to provide free health checks during the international fixtures this season. We were also promoting the awareness of skin cancer and handing out free UV wristbands and sun cream. Next year we want to start offering free health checks at local cricket clubs, open to any member of the public. Older People Friendship Group New for 2015 has been our engagement with older people considered to be at risk of isolation. Working with the local authority we have been hosting a number of sessions including lunch clubs and giving match day tickets to bring people together. This has proved hugely popular and will be extended next year. Catch up club Catch up Club is a group that works with people diagnosed with dementia. The group meet up every two weeks and we use sport and in particular cricket as a way to support the therapy sessions. Reminiscing about sporting moments has proved to be very effective and this is something we will be developing further in 2016.
