Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2020
25 www.sheffieldcricketlovers.org.uk DD was a humble man with a cheeky sense of humour, something which I think engendered a warmth with all those people, professional cricketers, officials, administrators and speakers he met along the way - and many of them here today. I’ll share these with you.. Alec Stewart: “Sad news to read about David. He’ll be looking down on us all, watching cricket from the best seat in the house” Michael Vaughan: Such a sad day, David did so much for cricket in South Yorkshire” Darren Gough: (from NZ): “So sad to hear that news. My condolences to his family x One of the good men” Henry Olonga: “Oh boy, that breaks my heart. Please pass on my condolences.” And a crying emoji which would certainly have bemused David. Michael Parkinson: He was a significant figure in the history of Yorkshire cricket in that no-one of my acquaintance did more to further the virtues of the game - tireless in his work for Yorkshire cricket in general and for the SCLS in particular. To say he will be sorely missed is to misunderstand just how important he was to all of us who were fortunate enough to benefit from his wisdom and his friendship. He was a particularly good man and irreplaceable.” And David knew every single member of the Society by name - a good effort with more than 200 regular members. David definitely had his own way of doing things, not necessarily altogether in a 21st Century way, but no-one can deny that Sheffield Cricket Lovers’ Society would not be celebrating its 60th birthday in April next year without the inimitable David Drabble. Other tributes… Robin Smith, Chairman YCCC: “This is sad news indeed... David was a VP of many years standing and a committee member before that. He was also a Yorkshire cricket supporter of unquestionable loyalty, coupled with a capacity for enthusiasm and hard work. He will be greatly missed next season on the Headingley balcony and at the Shef- field Cricket Lovers’ Society.” Sheffield Collegiate: “Sad day for cricket, fantastic person. Thoughts are with his family and friends.” YCCC: “Our thoughts are with Anne and the family.” Geoffrey Boycott: “Extremely sad, we have been friends for a very long time. He loved Yorkshire CCC, watched a lot of cricket and knew so many members & supporters. Much love to Anne.” What a legacy ... stumps have been drawn Cricket Lover through and through. Sadly ... What a man David Collier presents DD with his ICC medal
