mopped up It was a simple question. Funny how it can throw up strange memories when you get round to answering. It was one of those “When was the rst time?” questions - as in, “When was the rst time you went to Bramall Lane?” Now, we’re talking cricket here. I think I know when the rst football visit was but not sure there hadn‘t been one before. For cricket? Remember things quite vividly. Except what actually went on out in the middle! ere was my rst taste of an Eccles cake. And Tizer. But I digress (see what I mean about strange memories?). I can’t even remember if I was excited but at just 9-years-old, going to my rst Yorkshire game at Bramall Lane, you can bet I had sleepless nights and was over the moon (did they use that phrase back in 1958?). To help me along I have checked back. It was Wednesday, July 30th, 1958. Midweek? I know why. Last in July, rst in August, steelworks holiday weeks in Rotherham. Which tells me my Dad was o that week and that the ‘Cool Aussies’ Former She eld Star Sports journalist LES PAYNE recalls a long ago visit to Bramall Lane. 17
