Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2022

31 Despite the unseasonably warm weather that persisted throughout October 2021 there was no escaping that winter well and truly set in here in She eld. Having moved house in October my body hadn’t really recovered from the most relentless cricket season I have ever played. However, I can now gaze out the window at my new Peak District view and re ect on a long season with plenty to think about. I am looking to focus on the achievements (or lack of) of others rather than recollections about my personal experiences. Some of you will no doubt have your own experiences and be able to pull out from the depths of Play Cricket, weirder and wonderful scorecards of games you or your associates competed in. One club in the wider Yorkshire Leagues really stands out in terms of records this year, namely Rawdon Cricket Club which plays in the Airedale and Wharfedale Senior Cricket League bit.ly/3pe8Sne It is fascinating to see how a club could feature in two of the most extraordinary results I found in Play Cricket. e rst is a Cup tie v Follifoot in April in which the 2nd X1 racked up an unimaginable 457 for only 2 wickets. My insider knowledge of this game - from an umpire in that league - revealed that Rawdon were three divisions higher than the opposition in this Preliminary Round game and, having lost their rst two league matches, elected to bat rst. But the game needed to start late to allow the eighth opposition player to arrive so that the proceedings could commence, due to a rule allowing teams to play with eight or more players. e nal scorecard is absolutely amazing to behold I and I can’t recall a club game having a winning margin of 368 runs before. You can see for yourself if you look at https://bit. ly/3cYBf31 Rampant Rawdon were making history again a few weeks later. is time their 1st XI - in a league match against Beckwithshaw - batted rst and scored a meagre (!) 412 for 2 wickets, You can’t beat local league cricket for weird and wonderful statistics and ADEN BIDDLE has trawled the scene to come up with these gems with bat and ball…
