Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2023

DAVID LONGLEY the committee 3 Robert Nolan from the RSB gave an excellent and very inspirational speech, and I was fascinated to see his daughter telling him his carrots were at 5 o’clock etc. It was an great evening, held in the new Owlerton venue for the first time, although it was unfortunate that our President, Sir Michael Parkinson, could not be with us through no fault of his own. The Society has enjoyed great longevity with regard to Presidents; we have had just two in Norman Yardley for 30 yrs and Sir Michael for the last 32. Quite a record and one we should be proud of. Ali Saad is doing an excellent job in securing our speakers, and I hope you agree that the mix of styles and subject matter has produced a season of entertaining and often very entertaining evenings. Long serving Committee member Brian Whitehead and Andy Jordan were responsible for sorting out and cataloguing David Drabble’s vast collection of sporting artefacts. Brian has since been instrumental in purchasing a commemorative plaque in honour of David on behalf of the Society. It is now in the Father Time Wall at Lord’s. It seemed fitting for the committee to decide that Dorothy Betts would be a most worthy recipient of the David Drabble Honorary Life Membership Award. She has done a brilliant job through a very difficult period, and without her I doubt if our society would have survived. Thankfully, a restructure of the Committee over the last twelve months or so has resulted in a greater sharing of the load through new faces coming on board for specific roles; Jon Roddis is now Secretary, Bob Yardley our Event Organiser and David Whiteway becomes Treasurer. There have been departures, most recently Vice Chair Tim Pickford and I thank him for his hard work. In addition, Mick Gibson and Andy Daykin have decided to step down but have assured us that they are willing to assist us where necessary on occasions. Dorothy has agreed to become Vice Chair which frees her from a multi role commitment, but keeps her expertise in a broader role that we will benefit from. Finally, my thanks to members for their support, and to the committee for their dedication throughout the year.
