7 100 Years ago…1919 In the first season post war it appears to be the case that fixtures did not commence until late May. Three teams were run – 1 st , 2 nd and an ‘A’ XI which presumably was a 3 rd XI equivalent as all fixtures were on each Saturday. 16 games were fixtured for each team concluding on September 13 th . The season was not successful for the 1 st XI with only 3 fixtures won all season, 6 losses and 5 draws (two results have yet to be found). The team scored 2026 runs and conceded 2165 runs. Only 3 batsmen scored over 200 runs and these were F.S Church (292 @ 29.20), F.Shuttleworth (269 @ 22.42) and club professional G.Booth (233 @ 19.42). F.S Church had recently been demobilised from army service (where he served as a 2 nd Lieutenant in the Cheshire Regiment) and the 1919 season was his last for Timperley. Top score in the season was by F.S Church in scoring 114 out of 196 for 5 at home in a drawn fixture against The Western. Leading 1 st XI wicket taker was F.Bell with 29 including a ‘7 for’ in the season opener (unfortunately lost) at Northwich on May 24 th . The second and ‘A XI’ playing record is unfortunately substantially incomplete. From the information available it would seem that these teams also struggled as no notable batting or bowling performances are on record. Frank Stanley Church Frank Church played for Timperley from 1907 to 1919. He and his brother Eric helped resurrect Timperleys playing fortunes after a period in the early 1900s when the 1 st XI did not win many fixtures. A renowned local sportsman, Frank represented Cheshire at both Hockey and Cricket although he did not play his club Hockey for Timperley, being a Bowdon player. He lived on Winton Road near Altrincham Grammar School so it is surprising that he played his cricket at Timperley. Whether it was a question of relative standard between the two clubs or one of being paid to play has been lost to time.
