In the week preceding the fixture heavy rainfall had caused the outfield at Alderley Edge to become saturated and boggy. The pitch was declared unfit midweek with no possibility of play for the second week in succession. The rain in late April was the last significant precipitation until July. The impact of this lack of rain was to cause the recently recovered outfield drain lines to crack and settle causing a significant undulation of the outfield. The groundsman and volunteer staff were required to top up the drain lines as best as possible throughout the Summer in an attempt to reduce the rutting.
