Lincolnshire County Cricket League Handbook 1973

REVIEW - '72 Season 1972, the ninth since the Lincolnshire County Cricket League was formed, proved to be a stimulating one in terms of competition, with new Champions emerging in the shape of the young Appleby Frodingham side and the League's representative XI again proving its claim as one of the :best League teams in the County by reaching the semi-final of the League Cricke t Conf~rence Trophy Competition. The Lincolnshire League XI's success up to the semi-final t ie at Hartlepool was achieved despite having to play every round away from home. Appleby For~ingham's >triumph·was the result of their gradual development over the past two o r three years, and was also a just reward for the enthusiasm and h ard work which were constant features of their performance. Cleetho rpes were thus deposed, after a period in which they had largely dominated the team honours. Not that Cleethorpes or other sides made things easy for Appleby Frodingham, for the Scunthorpe side certainly had to work for their first Lincolnshire League Championship. In Division One Barton Town emerged on top to regain their place in the Premier Division and they will be accompanied into the top flight by newcomers Saxilby. It proved to be quite a season overall for the Appleby Frodingham Club, for their second team, together with Louth, were promoted to Division One. As usua-1, individuals created new records and contributed splendidly on many occasions with outstanding performances. One particularly pleasing instance however involved Ted Nutter who, in his last season, finished on top of the Premier Division bowling averages. What a fitting finale for a player who has long been regarded as one of our leading seam bowlers, but is now working outside of Lincolnshire and unable to continue his playing association with Cleethorpes and the Lincolnshire League . He will be missed. Probably those were the most significant points of the last season , but it would be impossible to-crystallise the events of a whole cricket term within a brief review such as this. Therefore, if there are important contributions to last year's season w ith in the Lincolnshire County Cricket League which have been missed the n we apologise in advance. 2
