Lincolnshire County Cricket League Official Handbook 2022

Louth Cricket Club - 200 not out! Louth Cricket Club are one of the oldest cricket clubs in existence in Lincolnshire and we are very much looking forward to celebrating our 200th anniversary this season. We have enjoyed a rich and varied history have been at the heart of the Louth community for the last two centuries. Our first competitive fixture was in 1824 vs Sherwood Foresters at Nottingham. Games against Norfolk, East Riding & Notts soon followed and there is evidence that Louth effectively operating as the Lincolnshire county side well into the 1840s. Did you know Louth also staged one of the earliest 'varsity' matches when in 1837 an Oxford vs Cambridge match was staged at Louth? Another ground-breaking game was played in 1887 when our London Road ground was the venue for a Gents vs Ladies match. The Gents all batted left-handed and used broom handles for bats to help even things up for the 'fairer sex'! Not sure that this would fit well with today's equality and diversity agenda but hosting this type of match was evidence itself of how progressive our Club has been over the years. By far the biggest game in our history however was in September 1850 when Louth played England. Over 2000 spectators watched a Louth side lose by an innings to the All-England Eleven team that included William Clarke, John Wisden, George Parr & Arthur Mynn - George Parr scoring 90 which was a remarkably high score considering the general state of pitches and protective equipment at the time! To 200 years not out in a suitable way, we plan to hold a week-long cricket festival -July 24th-July 31 st. London Road (our home for the last 153 years) will be staging a County fixture & hosting junior soft-ball cricket festivals The highlight of the week however will be on Friday July 29th when Louth 1st team take on a Representative XI to include ex England internationals. Further details, including ticket information, to follow - all welcome to watch on the day! We look forward to welcoming all teams to London Road this season to help us celebrate our special milestone. Here's to the next 200 years! Louth CC - photo taken at the beginning of the 1900s. 15
