This is Burnley’s 10th Worsley Cup success and they are the first team ever to have won the trophy 4 times in a row. The Lancashire Telegraph sponsor the Second Eleven Knockout Cup. This year the final was at Bentgate where Haslingden hosted Burnley. Haslingden won the toss and elected to bat first. The match was in fact played over two consecutive Saturdays and on Day 1 Haslingden closed their innings on 221 for 9 after having been 87 for 4 at one stage until Muneeb Ahmed and his captain put on 66 for the 5th wicket. Muneeb eventually fell for 91. Day 2 saw Burnley slump from 33 for 2 to 69 for 9 with only Matthew Lamb achieving double figures with 33 and the innings ended in the 33rd over with Burnley 75 all out and Muneeb Ahmed was also in the wickets with 4 for 19 from 10 overs. This is Haslingden’s 7th Junior Cup. Moorhouses Brewery continued their sponsorship of the 20/20 competition which was the second year played under a two-group format of Blond Witch and Pride of Pendle Groups. In 2017 we will revert to three groups as we welcome Clitheroe, Darwen and Great Harwood into the competition so we will need another group name from Moorhouses. The group winners were Church and Burnley and they were joined by Lowerhouse, Rishton, Todmorden, Enfield, East Lancashire and Ramsbottom in the newly introduced quarter finals. Rishton, Church, Todmorden and East Lancs were successful and this meant that we had Rishton v Church and Todmorden v East Lancs in the Semi Finals. Church made 162 for 2 from their 20 overs, mainly thanks to 84 not out by Zain Abbas and Rishton fell 47 runs short despite a top score of 37 not out from Ben Bridson. In the other semifinal East Lancs made 141 for 5 in a match reduced to 15 overs Andries Gous top scoring with an unbeaten 72. In reply Todmorden were led by professional Ashton Turner who made 97 and was out with the score on 123 for 2 leaving Ben Pearson and Freddie Priestley to knock off the remaining runs with an over to spare. Todmorden hosted the final and Church won the toss and batted first. Zain Abbas made 33, Sam Holt 18 and Joel Gaskill 23 as a total of 118 for 7 was posted.
