Alliance Midweek Cricket League Handbook 2014

25 Division B Eckington stormed through the division and quickly secured the 7tle. And seemingly equally quickly decided to leave the League. Second spot and therefore the only promoted side from Division B went University Staff, who won their final fixture whilst nearest rivals Millhouses went down to defeat against Norton Woodhouse. Some succour for Millhouses as the wily off-breaks of Sohail Mumtaz diddled out a division’s best 20 wickets, whilst his spin-twin, Peter Holmes was next best with 14 wickets. Sharrow’s Saqib Shazad was leading run- scorer with over 320 runs, ending with just one run more than Uni Staff’s evergreen, the prolific Paul Kerry. Ridgeway and Hallam Lodgers fought hard, but ul7mately could not hold onto their Division B status. Finally, men7on must go to De La Salle’s aggressive young ba8er Kieran O’Sullivan, who hit 103 against Sharrow. Victory in the penul7mate round of matches gave that honour to The Wednesday, so Telecom had to se8le for second spot. The Wednesday were undoubtedly helped by having both the leading run-scorer in the division – 300 runs for Ben Heap with an unbeaten century to boot – and the leading wicket-taker – 17 wickets for Mark Dowling. Brincliffe enjoyed their best season for many years in finishing third, but plaudits must go to the very youthful side of Hollinsend A, who despite finishing bo8om, thoroughly enjoyed themselves and gained valuable experience.
