Strathmore Cricket Union Handbook 1998

34 THE DRUMMOND FAMILY There are three Peter Drummonds (and a Gordon) in Meigle Cricket Club. All the Peters are plumbers, while Gordon is still a schoolboy. Cricketers all. PMD is known as Auld Pete. The grandad of them all, Auld Pete is now a spectator, Hon. President and fund raiser. War interfered with his illustrious playing career and coaches such as Brogden, Paynter, Halstead and Manville made sure he played for Perthshire as well as the great sides of the 1950s. Purveyors of slack bowling in the Union know PCJD for his powerful bat and big shoulders with an eye for the ball, whose defensive shots you would rather not watch. His spin bowling has been used to effect by skippers other than himself. He has hands likes scoops on a JCB, waiting to take every catch except the one at Freuchie when the sun was in his eyes on the boundary and he was falling over beer glasses. Young Pete and Gordon have made their marks on the senior game at a very early age, benefiting from Kiwi and Springbok Coaches, starting with Chris Pickett onwards. Young Pete decided to be a mind reader and become a wicket keeper. He is agile, eager and always improving, and is hardest on himself when something goes by. Jon Cooke from South Affica was a class keeper but he was kept in the field by Meigle to further young Pete’s apprenticeship. An all rounder, Gordon Drummond bowls very quick stuff for a schoolboy and has a good grip of Scotland. No-one was more indignant than Gordon when Meigle controversially lost a 2- Counties tie for fielding him before his future in the 1st Division was secure. He and his brother have since both represented their country at under-17 level.
