Strathmore Cricket Union Handbook 2003

2 INTRODUCTION The Strathmore Union has never been afraid to embrace change for the benefit of cricket in general. Ever since Gavin Garden became President in 1992, the Union has sought to engage with other organisations with a view to improving the standard of cricket in the North East. Depending on the outcome of the EGM on 29 April, we may be embarking on the biggest change we have ever seen at the end of this season. The proposal to amalgamate with the Perthshire Cricket League is covered elsewhere in this booklet but it is step which, if we have the courage to take it, can only enhance local cricket. Last year, Inverurie, this year Grammar /Gordonians. The loss of long- established clubs from the Union is very sad. As separate entities, both these clubs made great contributions to the Union over a span of more than 50 years. Grammar had more success in pot-hunting and, in Big Jerry Moir, contributed the best amateur bowler ever to grace the Union. Everyone will hope that their return to the Grades allows a rejuvenation. Following in Rossie Priory’s footstep, Perthshire League club Strathearn have entered their 2nd XI in Division Two. Many Union players will not know much about the long history of the Doo’cot Park side so I have taken the liberty of reproducing a brief history of the club, gleaned from their Centenary celebrations in 1979. Rossie themselves are celebrating their 175th anniversary with a number of on and off-field events this summer. As the third oldest club in Scotland, they are, however, only the second-oldest of the Union’s clubs, Perthshire having been formed two years earlier, in 1826, The Union is very grateful to all those who devote time and effort to the production of this booklet. The efforts of Ian Chisholm in the keeping of our statistics are legendary. The continued support of our sponsors and advertisers is greatly appreciated. Within these pages, you can find companies providing a wide range of services and supplies. Please use them when you can and mention the Union when you do. Over the past 19 years, I reckon that the advertisers have contributed almost £10,000 to Union funds - twice as much as club subscriptions over the same period!
