Strathmore Cricket Union Handbook 2003

5 league. It is likely to be called ‘The Strathmore and Perthshire Cricket Union’. I believe this development, by our two forward thinking leagues, will be good for the furtherance of cricket in the Tayside and North Fife area and could be a blueprint for a parallel development in Aberdeen/Grampian. The area bounded by the new league sets itself up nicely for being bite sized as a development area within the North District, and, I believe, should and could be seen as such from a national perspective. Clearly our member clubs from Aberdeen and Huntly continue participation in the new league, playing in the premier division for so long as it remains the only feeder league for clubs in the North to a higher standard of competition. I have been involved in some discussions with Scottish Cricket on redefinition of the Districts (North, South, East and West in old money). With the advent of Scotland’s involvement in one day cricket in England and the need to bridge the gap between club and the national side, then it seems that the time is right to bring about a change. The North, which currently extends from Shetland to Stirling, is a relic of history, and is long overdue for redefinition in terms of its boundaries and what the areas are to be within its boundaries. My vision is for each area within the North to have its own league, each managing junior and senior cricket and supported by a development officer commensurate with its requirements. Have you any views on this matter? If so please get in touch. Following on frommy comments in the handbook of last season I am pleased to say that junior cricket in the Strathmore Union area continues to make progress through the local area groups of Angus, Dundee, Perth/Kinross and Grampian Activ8. The first inter area under 13 competition of the season takes place Continued on page 38
