John Muckersie of Aberdeenshire would have been gratified to have seen that the scheme he worked hard to promote had produced the fluidity which he hoped to achieve. In the first seventy years of its existence, the Union’s top division was graced by a total of eighteen clubs, of whom no fewer than ten played in the Division every season from 1947 to 1998. In the eleven years since the opening up of the league structure, again, eighteen clubs have participated in the top division but only two, Huntly and Meigle, have been in the top flight in every year. Of the six founder members of the Union from 1929, Meigle alone has retained its position in the top tier for the whole of the Union’s existence.
