Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

96 Strathmore this year also achieved the unprecedented feat of winning the Batting and Bowling Awards in both Divisions, and congratulations were due to Don Crighton, George Myles, Lindsay Guthrie and Ian Dear for their deeds. Strathmore also had the second and third places in the Batting in Nigel Hazel and John Callander. It was hard to imagine such a total dominance. They did now and again have their bad games – they lost the Three Counties Cup final to the Aberdeenshire Cricket Association, Mannofield XI beat them in the League on a day that Myles wasn’t playing and on a miserable day at Hamilton Crescent they exited the Scottish Cup after a poor score against Uddingston – but such days were few. All was not well in the Union establishment however in 1967. Bob Laing, who had been of course a founder member of the Union in 1929 along with such luminaries as RW Sievwright, and had been Secretary since shortly after the Second World War threatened resignation. He was upset on two grounds – one was that he did not feel that he was getting enough support from clubs on matters like Match Returns, and in addition he was particularly peeved at the actions of Forthill XI who filled their team with men who were recognised Forfarshire 1st XI players in order to win a place in the Scottish Cup next year.
