Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
105 Old Trafford on 28th July 1971 when Lancashire beat Gloucestershire in the crepuscular gloom and even the BBC News had to give way so that the nation could see a great finish in front of a huge excited crowd. By this time as well, the limited Overs Sunday League, sponsored by a tobacco firm, had started to show one game in its entirety on a Sunday. The future of cricket was beginning to unfold. 1972 saw a good Ashes series between England and Australia. Massie of Kilmarnock ripped through England at Lord’s, but both sides won two Tests each, and cricket won back a few television fans whom it had been gradually losing over the past few years. Strathmore won their seventh title in a row, although this year Brechin pushed them hard, but Strathie could not repeat their success in the Scottish Cup, losing to Stenhousemuir at the Tryst in a feisty encounter. Kilmarnock, whom they beat in last year’s final, also beat them in a friendly at Lochside, but the big disappointment was the defeat to Blairgowrie in the Three Counties Cup.
