Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

109 This result more or less broke Strathmore’s challenge (they had also earlier in the season unaccountably lost to bottom team Montrose at home) and Blairgowrie became champions for the first and only time. Coupar Angus won the 2nd XI Championship for the third year in a row, but Strathmore had a certain amount of recompense for their loss of the Championship by their victories in the Three Counties and the Two Counties Cups. They won the Three Counties Cup at Brechin against Meigle by simply scoring too many runs and by tight bowling and tigerish fielding which saw four Meigle run outs! 1965 was probably one of the better years for TV cricket in the 1960s. The three-Test series against New Zealand was hardly the most competitive there has ever been, for England won 3-0 and at Leeds John Edrich scored 310 not out, England’s first ever triple century since the Second World War – but the South Africans in the second half of the season were a different matter altogether. Far better than Jackie McGlew’s side in 1960, they beat England 1-0 in a very exciting series, the main feature being the play of the Pollock brothers, and the lethal cover point fielding of Colin Bland.
