Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
110 Blairgowrie and Strathmore thus qualified for what was effectively the Scottish Cup, although it was heavily and regrettably disguised by sponsorship. A Scottish Cup was long overdue. Football’s Scottish Cup had been around since 1874, after all, and had not exactly been a failure. It was probably true that Scottish Cricket was not quite ready for a Scottish League (indeed attempts to start one 40 years later were less than totally successful and were soon abandoned in favour of a regional structure – the main problem being travelling) but a Scottish Cup to be played on Sundays seemed an excellent way of allowing the Strathmore Union teams to prove that they were at least the equal of the Scottish Counties, and indeed the East of Scotland League based in Edinburgh, and the Western Union (started as early as 1893 and showing signs of stagnation because of its stubborn refusal to allow other clubs to join them). It was a new challenge for 1966.
