Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
112 But the Strathmore Union survived all that. That things were changing however became apparent in 1973 when Arbroath broke Strathmore’s run of success. (Neil Prophet retired after the 1971 season, and George Myles played only one game in 1973). Weather-wise, it was a better than average summer, for Arbroath played 23 games in the Union and another indication of it having been a good summer came in the number of games that were drawn – 36 in all – something that is usually indicative of dry, flat pitches with the bowlers struggling to take wickets. Arbroath, for example, won 14 of their 23 games, but drew 8. Brechin who came second also played 23 games and also won 14 of them, but lost 3. Strathmore finished 4th – hardly a failure, but it was not well received in Forfar – and they were bitterly disappointed in the 1973 season, never more so than by their exit from the Three Counties Cup by the narrowest of margins to Brechin.
