Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
126 in the area, there was little doubt that cricket was changing with voices growing stronger every year for a truly Scottish Championship. There was the Scottish Cup – but Strathmore Union clubs were now not performing as well as they had been doing in the early 1970s – and some felt that a Scottish League might be a possibility. There were obvious problems involved in distance and logistics, but it was a problem that would not go away. Cricket in general had had a torrid time in the 1970s. There were now signs however that it was beginning to settle down. Players at the top level were now paid extortionately, as some thought, but certainly in a way that was commensurate with other sports. There still however remained a place for recreational cricket. The days of the large crowds had gone – for complex sociological reasons rather than cricketing ones – but the heart was still beating.
