Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
131 intemperate words were exchanged, and no-one suggested going off to the pub to drown sorrows (as would normally have been the case in such circumstances) as relations between the two clubs took a decided dip. Arbroath then asked for £10.00 travelling expenses for their wild goose chase of a journey, Meigle refused, more intemperate disputation took place, this time by letter, and the Management Committee of the Union had to be involved. Almost a year passed before Meigle agreed to cough up the £10.00 at the Union’s behest, and it was a long time before cordial relationships between the two clubs were restored. 1983 saw a dreadfully rainy May, but then a glorious June, July and August. In England, the third Cricket World Cup was played, won this time, rather surprisingly, by India who got the better of West Indies in a low-scoring final. But at local level the 1983 season was played under a shadow of the imminent departure of Strathmore from the Strathmore Union, something Union Committee and Prizewinners pictured at the 1982 AGM Back:- Norman Chisholm (Hon Pres), David Martin (Kinloch), Howard Smith (Secy), Dave Torrie (Pres), Gordon Hossick (Forthill), Niall Smith (Arbroath), Bobby Hopkins (Comm), George Jaffrey (DHSFP), Geoff Petrie (Arbroath), Graham Garden (Forthill) Front:- Tom McLeod (Hon Pres), Richard Ferro (AGSFP), Jerry Moir (AGSFP), Donald Stewart (Strathmore XI), Gary Burnett (Arbroath XI)
