Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
139 Press, The Dundee Courier in particular, had dealt with a disputed game against Forthill XI. It concerned a pitch that was not deemed suitable, particularly when Arbroath had, apparently, watered the pitch at a very late stage prior to the commencement of the match. This was not illegal, but The Courier, being a Dundee paper, had sided with Forthill XI and had somehow had access to a Committee decision, even before Arbroath had been told of it. However, although the Management Committee tut- tutted and made several recommendations about not watering a pitch on a Friday, nothing was done and Forthill’s complaint was dismissed. A few people however did want a certain reporter banned from Strathmore Union grounds, something that would have been difficult to enforce, to put it mildly. The SCU in Edinburgh then, with the best of intentions but a shade patronisingly perhaps, offered to give advice on the care and maintenance of their ground. However, Arbroath replied tetchily at the SCU AGM that “they felt that after 99 years of cricket at Lochlands, they knew full-well how to prepare a cricket pitch”.
