Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

141 The correspondence between Arbroath and the Secretary was lively, to say the least, and at one point a phone call terminated suddenly. Whether this was because the telephone was hung up in disgust or whether it was because the caller ran out of money (1987 was a good few years before the arrival of the universal mobile phone) we do not know. Things were still heated at the time of the final itself, and the Secretary who was also one of the Umpires was invited to stand down. Laudably, he refused, and duly Umpired the game without fear or favour. The game itself passed off without much incident although a Committee Member did complain about time wasting, in particular the inordinate amount of time taken for an Arbroath player to walk to the wicket, and Lawside - Union Second Division Champions 1987 Back:- Derek McDonough (Capt), David Nicoll, Colin Wilkie, John Durnin, Richard Miller, Bruce Dyer, Martin Hawthorne Front:- Scott Rodgers, Philip Dyer, Steven Caswell, Graham Moore, James Connor Absent:- Gerard Lerpiniere, David McDonald
