Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
146 School, Bill Brown of Meigle, Bruce Dyer of Lawside and Andy Thorogood of Montrose. Bruce Dyer in fact managed to score 4 centuries, aggregating 742 in 10 innings, with a highest score of 198 against Strathmore XI on 12th June although such was the frequency of his boundary-hitting confusing the scorers that day, it was more likely to have been 202! The Minute Book for 1988 is not without a touch of humour. For example, a Management Committee meeting was fixed for Sunday 2nd October “amidst much rustling of diaries” and a 7.00 pm start was fixed “to enable all athletics fans to stay up all night to watch the Olympic finals on the Saturday”, the Olympics being held in South Korea in 1988. It would have been difficult to imagine anyone getting distracted from the Strathmore Union by the English cricket that summer of 1988, for England were suffering yet another beating from the West Indies, and were at a particularly low ebb. Once ancient Rome had four Emperors in one year, in 1936 Great Britain had three kings and in 1988 England had four captains, the captain changing as often as the weather. (One of them was caught with a barmaid in his bedroom!) West Indies were indeed good, but we had the repeated sight of the England team taking the field in confident Brechin - Three Counties Cup Winners 1988 Back:- Ian Taylor (Scorer), Willie Allison, Grant Taylor, Neil Paterson, Ewen Massie, Neil Smith (Ump) Front:- Kevin Harrison, Nisa Patel, Les Milne (Capt), Mark Kellaher (Prof), Mark Thomson (V-Capt), Kevin Thomson
