Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
12 with the teas! The idea of women actually playing the game was however perhaps still a step too far, even for this progressive club. Brechin’s first game in the Union came on 4th May 1929 when, with Bob Laing excelling with both bat and ball and in spite of a very heavy shower, Brechin beat Meigle at Guthrie Park by 37 runs. The Courier states that “from early morning, King Sol gave promise of a fine afternoon’s sport, but in few instances were the teams able to complete their matches”, and Brechin were very lucky to do so. Brechin scored 123 with George Keelan taking 5 for 26 for Meigle, but Bob Laing’s 6 for 23 won the day. Ironically enough, it was against Meigle that they also wrapped things up at the appropriately named Victory Park, Meigle on 24th August. Brechin batted first on a fine day but with rather too much of a wind and reached 115, then dismissed Meigle for 89, Awty taking 6 wickets and The Brechin Advertiser being delighted to announce that Awty had been re-engaged for next season in the same edition that it was able to report that Brechin were the first winners of the Strathmore Union Championship.
