Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

170 professional Kruger Van Wyk who reached this amazing feat by scoring 945 runs, and only being out 4 times! Somewhat remarkably, such are the quirks of Mathematics, his Average is a great deal more than twice his Highest Score which was 104 not out! TheSecondDivision (the thirdtier)waswonbyArbroathXI, andBreadalbane XI won the Third Division. Arbroath also did well to win the Under 17s League but it was Forfarshire who won the under 15s and Under 13s. Arbroath also won the Three Counties Cup, and Stathearn XI won the Two Counties Cup. It appears that this was a particularly bad season for reports of abuse of Umpires and general poor discipline. The new President for 2006, Bob McFarlane of Rossie Priory is compelled in the 2006 Handbook to fire a shot across the bows, while acknowledging the fact that the real problem is the chronic lack of good, neutral Umpires. 2006 saw Mannofield win the Premier Division again, fighting off a strong challenge from Arbroath United. The weather was a shade better in 2006 than had been the case in previous years, and we had the Huntly professional Azhar Ali who batted 15 times and scored a century on 7 of these occasions, marginally less than 50% of the times he approached the crease! Being a professional, however, Azhar was not eligible for the Batting Award which went to A Nanthakumran of Mannofield. He did, however, have the consolation of breaking Dene Hill’s record for most runs in a season, reaching 1410. Four years later, he would be making his Test debut for Pakistan, at Lord’s against Australia and since then has gone on to play 67 Tests and 53 ODIs, captaining his country in both formats. Huntly’s bowling wasn’t so good, however, as their batting, and they lost 6 games. They did however win the Three Counties Cup, beating Perth in the final. Further down the Leagues, Breadalbane triumphed in the First Division, with Laurence Bax and Andy Jacobs winning individual awards, with Forthill XI the winners in the Second Division. Dundee High School won the Two Counties Cup, while Arbroath won all three League trophies at junior level. Disturbingly for the development of the game, they did this at the under 17 level by playing and winning only one game against Forfarshire, while the other two contenders Dundee High School and Forfarshire beat each other. Amusingly we note that Arbroath Under 13s called themselves the Arbroath United Lichties, while there was another team in the seven team competition (a healthy sign) called the Arbroath United Smokies.
