Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

15 which had been donated by The Earl of Strathmore after the end of the inaugural season and still played for today. Brechin went out of their way to encourage fans. They charged a sixpence for admission to games and a penny for “boys” (which presumably included girls), but for that, if you presented your admission ticket between 3.30 and 5.30 pm, you would get a cup of tea and a biscuit. In the depths of the depression with the jute mills beginning to struggle and with “short-time” working prevalent, this was a gesture which won them friends and supporters. The 1930 season began with a thrashing of Montrose. After the Brechin team scored 230 for 8 (Closure Applied) the “Gable Enders” were dismissed for 61, and no-one would have predicted that on 26th July, Montrose would be the first team ever to lower the colours of Brechin in the Strathmore Union. The game had been rained off the previous week and was re- arranged for the start of the local holiday week. Crucially this meant that Davie Chapman was away on holiday. Even so, when Montrose reached The Kirriemuir team at the Opening of the Barrie Pavilion at The Hill Back:- W Smith (Ump), C G Macartney (Australia), G Mills, D Kermack, J Smart, T Bisset, A Dick, G Strachan, A A Mailey (Australia), G Stewart (Marker) Front:- G Kettles, D Stevenson (V-Capt), A Lowson, D McGregor (Capt), W Mearns, J R McGregor Inset:- Peter Lindsay, Sir J M Barrie, Provost H E Peacock, A B Bisset
