Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

20 1932 saw Brechin win the 1st XI Championship again (not however the 2nd XI Championship which went to Meigle 2nd XI following a play-off against Kirriemuir at the neutral venue of Forfar) but this time the circumstances were a little more contentious with Brechin all set to go and plunge in at the deep end if things hadn’t gone their way. 1929, 1930 and 1931 had passed with almost idyllic peacefulness. Not 1932 however! Hooliganism was not unknown at football matches, but more or less non- existent at cricket matches in 1932. Yet there was a little crowd disturbance at Forfar on 11th June when the Brechin Umpire (each team provided an Umpire at this point) gave a few decisions which were not to the liking of the Forfar crowd and we hear reports of a little “mobbing and jostling” and “disgusting epithets being hurled” at the end until the Strathmore captain Mr JH Melville managed to persuade his supporters to disperse. Mr Melville was so appalled by this behaviour that he was even heard to threaten never to play in Forfar again.
