Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

33 was looked upon as a welcome piece of innovation at the time, and was rewarded with large crowds. It was not exactly unparalleled but it was unusual for the times. Brechin gained some consolation for not winning the League by becoming the first winners of this trophy. They did this by beating Meigle in the final at Forfar on Tuesday 17th July. Meigle batted first, and in what was a virtual one-man show, Willie Tasker put on 62 of his team’s 92, with Graham taking five wickets and Eddie taking four. Brechin passed that total with steady contributions from Chapman and Dalgetty with 12 minutes to spare. At the AGM of 1935 concern was expressed by Bob Laing of Brechin that the Cup might be a financial loss to some clubs, as long as the home team retained all the “gate” money. The “gate” money was by no means insubstantial, but if a team had to travel to all their games, they would incur significant expenses in train fares or petrol money if they used cars. We can only, some 80 years later look back with envy and indeed amazement at someone talking about “gate” money at a cricket match! Sad news came with the resignation from the League of Dundee Downfield. They had been struggling for some time, and although theywon two games, Brechin 1935 - Inaugural winners of the Three Counties Cup Back:- G Forbes, A Milne (Ump), S Duncan, G Robb, L Grant, Jack Graham, G A Moir, A Shand, Jas Graham (Secy) Front:- H R Cross, W Gradwell (Prof), D Chapman (V-Capt), R L Laing (Capt), W Eddie, J Walker, W Black (Hon Pres)
