Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

39 The AGM heard a report on the triumph of Mannofield XI who had won the Championship outright this year of 1938 (after sharing it last year) by dint of losing only one game throughout the season. It had been a very wet seasonwithmany postponements. Strathmoremade their first appearance among the winners when they won the 2nd XI Championship. Mannofield XI clinched the title on the late date of 17th September 1938 in a game which the Aberdeen Press and Journal describes as “farcical” with heavy rain, and quite clearly, if the Championship had not depended on it, it would not have been played. The game had been postponed since 5th September and a certain “needle” had been added to things when Blairgowrie and Brechin “failed to agree” a date for a replay of their postponed game. Brechin claimed the points, but the matter was still under discussion. It would not matter, however, if Mannofield XI beat Strathmore. Strathmore gamely agreed to play in dreadful conditions. They were aware that a win for themselves might well hand their local rivals, Brechin, Strathmore XI - Second Division Champions 1938 Pictured with the Mrs Farquharson of Haughton Cup Back:- J Black, J Anderson, D Balfour, H S Haxton, Alex Ferguson (V-Capt), A Malcolm Front:- D McGregor, G A Martin, F N Liddell (Capt), G B Ross, J F Langlands
