43 and early in September the Emergency Committee of the Strathmore Union called a halt to proceedings. The final of the Three Counties Cup between Gordonians and Strathmore had attracted 1,500 spectators to Brechin on the warm night of 20th July. They saw an exciting and controversial finish. Strathmore batted first and reached 125 for 7 in their 80 minutes. Gordonians were then given the same amount of Overs that Strathmore had faced, and stumps were pulled with Gordonians still one run short. Great was the joy among the Forfar contingent, but the Gordonians scorer managed to persuade the Umpires that there had been a mistake and that there was one ball left. In circumstances of consternation and indeed acrimony, the players had to come back for one more ball, from which Gordonians needed two runs. It was bowled by Jock Farquharson to George Youngson (who would go Gordonians - Three Counties Cup Winners 1939 Back:- W Addison (Groundsman), R E Gamblin, J A Forbes, B R Tough (Scorer), L C Low, G W Youngson, J S C Bisset (Secy) Front:- J R D Murray, E Mathieson, J R Cutt (Capt), C R Emslie, J A Low In Front:- W D Robertson, J A Fraser Inset: D P Fox (Top), Dr L R A Ogg (Bottom Left), W Johnston (Bottom Right)
