Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

51 a wicket every 20.28 balls and averaged 5.4 wickets per game! He also scored a century. Mysteriously however, in 1946, the Cup normally given to the winners of the League had disappeared. The Minutes of the 1946 AGM coyly describe the Cup as being “not available”, and when one reads in the same Minutes that a suggestion was also made to provide a flag for the winners of the League, one begins to suspect that maybe it had been lost altogether, or even given, in some well- intentioned but misguided gesture of patriotism, to the Government to be smelted down for war purposes in the same way that school playground railings had been removed. But, no, the Cup equally mysteriously reappeared and was duly presented to Jock Farquharson of Strathmore at a specially convened meeting in the middle of the dreadful winter of February 1947. The AGM of October 1946 confirmed that the Batting award had been won by Willie Tasker of Meigle, and the Bowling award by George Youngson of Gordonians with a remarkable average of 3.67. JD Henderson had actually taken 74 wickets, beating the record of 71 which Bob Sievwright had established in 1933. Aberdeen Grammar School FP were admitted to the League, but Blairgowrie were going into temporary abeyance as they were having problems with their ground at Davie Park. A long discussion took place about what to do with scorebooks after the target had been reached. Does one continue, or does one close the book? It was decided to apply to J D Henderson
