Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018
56 from the great Australian Sidney Barnes as the home side were soundly beaten in front of a crowd of over 1,200. 1948 was a momentous year in world cricket. It was Bradman’s last tour of Great Britain, and the Australians, rightly called the “Invincibles” won the Test Series 4-0, although the Test Match at Manchester was ruined by rain when England looked to have a chance. There were several remarkable incidents. Both Keith Miller and Ray Lindwall were booed at various times for bowling bumpers and even beamers, Australia scored 404 in a day at Headingley to win the Test, and Essex could correctly claim on 15th May that they had bowled Australia out in a day at Southend. The only problem was that the Aussies scored 721, and four of their players scored centuries, one of them inevitably being Don Bradman. A remarkable day’s cricket!
