Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

70 to Meigle when the Strathmore Union had been safely won. The Union however had bad news when the sudden death of Tom Ireland of Forfarshire was reported on 13th May. Mr Ireland had served in various capacities on the Committee, and was well liked and respected by all who knew him. Perhaps it was fitting that his Forthill XI won the Three Counties Cup that year. They defeated Strathmore on 13th July in yet another exciting final at Brechin when the Forfar side fell just six runs short of Forthill XI’s 103. Strathmore were without Myles that night, and that probably made the difference, although the moment when Fleming trapped Hazel lbw for 18 was also a significant moment. It was however only a slight glitch in what was a great season for Strathmore. Gavin McKiddie wrote an interesting piece for the Strathmore programme decades later about his experiences as a young cricketer in the 1955 season. It was called “The Good Old Days Or Were They?” He says “8th April 1955. On a cold, bitter Saturday, the Strathie players were in two minds about the first practice of the year – excited that another season was beginning Newly-arrived at Strathmore, Nigel Hazel’s Coaching Class 1955 contains a few future stars.
