4 than a little confusion, particularly when there is a team called Forfarshire who play at Forthill in Broughty Ferry. On occasion, the opposition or an Umpire have turned up at the wrong ground! But what seems to have happened is that the Forfar Cricket Club played quite happily at the Market Muir until they moved to Lochside in 1873. The ground at Lochside (one of the most scenic in Scottish cricket, one feels) was technically owned by the Earl of Strathmore at Glamis Castle, and was rented from Strathmore Estates. It seems that, at that time, their name began to change under the influence of pecuniary temptations from the wealthy aristocracy. Once again, as at Rossie Priory, this was “big house” cricket, although there was also “big house” cricket played in Glamis Castle’s grounds between the Castle Drive and the Glamis-Kirrie road. The Earl Claude and his four sons played for Glamis Castle XI prior to World War One. Sadly one of them, Fergus, would not return from that conflict. By the arrival of the 20th century, all local teams had fixtures against one another. The fact that there was as yet no League championship to play for does not in any way mean that there was any less competition or rivalry. Local bragging rights have always counted for a great deal, and there are many reports of defeats not always being accepted in the right way, and A grim looking set of Forfar cricketers sometime in the late 19th century
