Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

88 the AGM that “Surely that is a record worthy of a Scottish cap”. On 5th May of that year at Davie Park, Blairgowrie, George took 10 for 14 as he ripped through the home side to dismiss them for 35 and although Myles never again took all 10 wickets that season, it was a familiar pattern as, on many occasions, the opposition failed to reach three figures. It was Brechin who won the Three Counties Cup, however, beating Strathie en route, and Coupar Angus won the 2nd Division Championship. This was thanks in part to fine bowling from Ian McKenzie who won the Bowling Award with 41 wickets and was believed to have been the youngest ever to have performed this feat. On the other hand the 2nd Division Batting Award was won by Ernie Balfour of Strathmore XI, widely considered to be one of the veteran elder statesmen of the Union. He was one of the very few who had played since before the war, and was still going strong. The Union Select played three Representative games in 1962, drawing with the Scottish Counties and Grange, but losing to the East of Scotland on a fiery pitch at Carlton where they encountered a 6 foot West Indian fast bowler of Edinburgh University called Rudi Webster who took 8 wickets.
