Strathmore Cricket Union: the first 90 years a history 1928-2018

93 Strathmore won the League very comfortably, losing only twice to Aberdeen Grammar School FP and Mannofield XI. They beat everyone else with a degree of comfort, including putting an end to any challenge from Blairgowrie in a game on Sunday 31st July at Lochside, a game played in a funereal atmosphere, for it was the day after England had won the World Cup. They also won the Three Counties Cup, beating the Perthshire Cricket Association at Meigle in the final but their first venture into the Scottish Cup came to grief at Lochside in early June at the hands of West Lothian. Strathmore could only score 78 runs from their 35x8 ball Overs that this competition rather eccentrically prescribed, and then the Umpire twice failed to give the West Lothian batsman Donald Ford (who played for Hearts in the football season) lbw when the crowd, from their excellent vantage points at long on and square leg saw clearly that he was plumb! This tournament was sponsored by a tobacco firm and was called “the Quaich”, a form of trophy frequently competed for in curling and other sports. Not everyone was aware of what a “Quaich” was, however, nor even how it should have been pronounced, for the local groundsman kept on telling everyone that “there’s a game on Sunday in the Quelch!” Strathmore in 1965, Three Counties Cup Winners Back:- R Birse (Groundsman), D McGregor (Scorer), J F Glenday (Secy), N Prophet (V-Capt), G Myles, I Ogilvie, E S Massie, A Guild, W Pate, J C Callander, C Parker (Umpire), D W Potter (Scorer) Front:- G T Strachan (Treas), G Ogilvie, D M Pattullo (Capt), G S Massie (Pres), N L Hazel (Prof), D Crighton, A Traill, J C Smith (V-Pres) Absent:- G T McKiddie
