Danish Cricket Yearbook 2019
n Af Jeremy Bray The Guernsey trip saw a mixture of some very good cricket applied with some very indifferent cricket which saw the Denmark National team lose 3 out of the 5 games to miss out on qualification to the global ICC T20 qualifiers held in Dubai October 2019. Up until the late withdrawal of no fewer than 5 high quality players, the Danish side would have definitely gone into the tournament as hot favou- rites. In the matches Denmark lost against Jersey by 18 runs, Guernsey by 6 runs and Germany by 7 wickets. Poor peri- ods with the bat where an inability to find boundaries at the right times plus crucial dropped catches was the dif- ference between losing and not winning those matches. Experience is crucial in all formats of the game and no more than in T20 where things happen so quickly that calm heads are invaluable. This was evident in the yout- hful and inexperienced Danish side where at important moments throughout the tournament the calm heads of experience were not there. Freddie Klokker amongst other unavailable experienced players were sorely missed in those important match-defining moments which could have been the difference between defeat and victory. The Denmark team showed their best form for the last game against a very dangerous Italian side who had a mixed tournament as well but on form were firm favou- rites in this encounter. The Danes batted first and through a 50 of 36 balls from Zishan Shah and 37 off 19 balls from Rizwan Mahmood, saw the Danes reach a total of 158 for 9 off their 20 overs. Probably 20 runs below the total they could have achieved considering the great partnership from Zishan Shah and Rizwan Mahmood. An outstanding bowling and fielding display restricted the Italians to be bowled out for 128 runs. Oliver Hald the best of the bowlers with 3-18 and Nicolaj Damgaard, Jino Jojo and Bashir Shah also getting 2 wickets a piece. A very pleasing finish to a tough tour to Guernsey where the question will always be asked: How would Denmark have fared if all players for this tournament were available?
