A History of Cricket at King Edward's School, BIrmingham
66 Malvern Second XI, with Paul playing probably his best innings for the School, 77 in 50 minutes, with five sixes and eight fours. After this there was a run of poorer displays, the worst being 37 all out against the Common Room. However, there was a victory against Tudor Grange, and Paul made 55 not out against Manchester Grammar School, KES finishing six runs short with two wickets left. In Cricket Week, KES were beaten by the Gentlemen of Worcestershire, and the School lost to the Old Edwardians (for whom Barnfield made 43 and Rand 53) by one run. The MCC were beaten for the first time, by two wickets: 57 from Pickering, five wickets from Ogden and four catches from Paul made this possible. Paul took seven wickets against a new opponent, Hardye’s School, Dorchester. Paul, Davis, Lee and Shaw left at the end of the year, but the opening attack of Ogden and Evans, plus several younger batsmen, remained to form the nucleus of the 1967 team under Pickering.
