King Edward's School, Birminbgham - List of Matches

Notes • W(D) or L(D) indicate matches recorded as a draw by Cricket Archive whereas in fact there was a result on 1st innings according to conventions prevailing at the time, now confirmed by Law 21.2. • A number in square brackets after the name of the opponents indicates a match played on a limited overs basis. • The list distinguishes between ‘Old Edwardians’ (the annual match against the School) and ‘Old Edwardians CC’. On Cricket Archive, ‘Old Edwardians’ denotes the Old Edwardians CC, so Cricket Archive uses ‘Old Edwardians Association’ to refer to the annual match involving the Old Edwardians. • Information about individual matches in footnotes is limited to matches not on Cricket Archive, and is the sum total of what is known about these matches. * denotes that only potted scores are available. # For matches listed as on Cricket Archive, indicates that extra information is now available, not yet loaded onto Cricket Archive; for matches listed as not on Cricket Archive, indicates that match details are now available, but the match has not yet been added to Cricket Archive. In nearly all instances, the extra information results from research done by Harry Watton. Information as to seasonal results (PWLD etc) may be found in various sources, eg the Chronicle, Wisden (as from 1952), and KES Cricket Fixture Cards (the 2004 card lists results between 1946 and 2003). Not infrequently there are differences between these sources, differences that it is not always possible to reconcile. The figures for PWLD etc given here are based primarily on the matches known to have been played as listed in this document – which has been compiled from the Chronicle, Cricket Archive, additional information provided by Harry Watton OE, and for particular years, from other sources noted. Footnotes indicate variations between the various sources and show the reasons for adopting the seasonal totals given here. Total number of matches played: For some years, the total number of matches played is unknown; for other years, the Chronicle may give a figure for the total number of matches played but no definitive figures for matches won, lost or drawn. Where the total number of matches played is uncertain, or the figures for WLD do not add up to the total played, but simply indicate the known totals, this is denoted by question marks. Tied matches: Following a change in the Laws in 1947, a match is not regarded as tied unless it is played out to a conclusion, ie the side batting last must be all out with the scores level. Since 1947, the Chronicle has on occasions recorded a match as tied when it finished with the scores level but the side batting second were not all out. These are recorded here as draws (unless it is clear that the match was a limited-overs match). Abandoned matches: Where no play was possible, Wisden records the match as ‘Abandoned’, and does not include this in the number of matches played. If some play takes place, then the match is a draw. The Chronicle has not always been consistent in this respect. The figures given here follow the Wisden practice. A few matches in which no play was possible have found their way onto Cricket Archive and are therefore listed in the ‘Matches Played’ list.
